Direct cycle connection to Brussels Airport

REDUCING TAILBACKS TOGETHER

Today, only 1% of our employees come to work by bike or on foot. And that’s far from enough! That’s why Brussels Airport is promoting the use of the electric bicycle for employees who live within a 15-kilometre radius around the airport.

Improving the cycling infrastructure at, and around, the airport is crucial. Because only when the alternatives are sufficiently attractive, will we leave our car at home.

BRANCH OF THE F3 CYCLE HIGHWAY

Brussels Airport has started the design study for a branch of the F3 cycle highway between Leuven and Brussels. Following the railway bed to the Nossegem station, the new route − which cyclists will be able to use as of 2019 - will provide a direct cycle connection to the airport.

We are delighted that Brussels Airport Company wants to create this cycle connection

Representative for Mobility

“We have long been keen on having a direct cycle connection between the cycle highway and the airport,” says Tom Dehaene, Representative for Mobility. “After all, with its 20,000 employees, the airport is a major employer. We are delighted that Brussels Airport Company wants to create this cycle connection.

CYCLE BRIDGE OVER THE BRUSSELS RING

Today, cyclists riding from Leuven to Brussels along the cycle highway inevitably run into the Brussels Ring. But that will soon change: a new cycle bridge over the motorway should be ready by 2020, making a connection to the airport possible. The new cycle route will run along the connection to the A201. “The connection was not originally in the high-speed train / cycle bridge project, but was considered expedient as a fast connection to the airport,” explains Minister of Mobility Ben Weyts.

FREE CHARGING STATIONS

Expanding the cycle route network is certainly important, but it is far from the only initiative that Brussels Airport is taking to encourage employees to use their bicycles. For example, in September 2017, we made electric and folding bicycles available to our employees for a month. And with success: 63% of the 34 participants now use their bicycle more often to come to work.

And to help the commuters who come to the airport every day on their e-bikes, we have installed 36 charging stations.
