Full speed ahead for Ninatrans

Pioneer in the use of eco-friendly technologies

Ninatrans is operating in our cargo zone. The haulier transports air cargo by road. In 2018, Ninatrans is writing a new “green” chapter in its history with the purchase of Scania lorries, which are powered by liquid natural gas (LNG). A first in Belgium.

Whilst LNG-powered vehicles have been around for quite some time, their engine power was insufficient for use in long-distance transport with heavy goods vehicles. Thanks to the development of the 410 hp gas engine at Scania, that's now changing. This new gas engine enables a 40-ton lorry to travel an impressive 1,000 kilometres without having to refuel! Ninatrans was sold on the idea and became the first haulier in Belgium to acquire this type of lorry for its fleet.

Environmentally friendly, cost-effective and quiet

Natural gas transforms into liquid (= LNG or Liquid Natural Gas) at a temperature of -162 °C. This simultaneously decreases the volume 600 times, enabling increased storage. The lorries are furnished with special gas tanks that are equipped to keep the LNG cold and operate in a similar way to a thermos bottle. LNG is currently the only cost-effective alternative fuel for heavy goods vehicles. Lorries running on LNG also emit less CO2 and fine particles, and cause 50 percent less noise pollution than diesel engines.

Reducing the impact to a minimum

“With this acquisition we wish to do our bit for a better environment”, enthuses Ninatrans company manager, Benny Smets. Further fleet replacement and expansion with LNG powered vehicles is already on our agenda. This will consolidate Ninatrans’ pioneering reputation for using the latest eco-friendly technologies for road transport. A commitment that Brussels Airport fully endorses.

What is LNG?

Short for 'Liquid Natural Gas', LNG reduces pollution both on a local and global level.

It has a beneficial impact on air quality and health, and makes a demonstrable contribution to the fight against climate change.

And, unlike petrol and diesel, which are transported by road in lorries, the gas requires zero transport by road and is less polluting as a result. In contrast, the generation of electricity for electric cars is still largely achieved by burning fossil fuels.
